Not polar bears but polar words – tracking down sentiment March 23, 2010

It is sentiment analysis terminology time. Next, we take a look at polar words.

Good or bad, beautiful or ugly, long or short, hyvä, paha, kaunis ja ruma, pitkä ja lyhyt — these words carry sentiment and are context dependent (long and short) or independent (good and bad).

Opinion words or phrases like these are one way of tracking down sentiment in textual content and pivotal to any opinion mining activity. They may be compiled manually, from a dictionary or from a large compilation of texts, a corpus. In addition to opinion words, sentiment may be tracked by looking into comparative forms (better than, worse than)

In our preliminary research phase, we have been charting down and getting excited about different web services offering media (and buzz) monitoring. Sentiment analysis is one of the more advanced semantic methods used in these services. But what makes a sentiment and how to track it down? In other words, how does reputation relate to sentiment relate to emotion relate to affect? Stay tuned, as we will be looking into this relationship in our up and coming papers on reputation and emotion.
